The Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children, Sector 32, Chandigarh imparts vocational training in different sections which are listed below:

 

 

 

Book Binding / File Making Selection.

Vocational wing has a book binding / file making section which was started in 2000 keeping in view the interest and ability of mentally challenged children..

 

This section  consists of 15 students in the age group of 14-18years. In this section, children are taught to bind books, making  files, note pads, envelops etc. The interest is created in children by making the work colorful. Children are also taught to protect themselves from various  machines used in the section.

This section has latest  equipment required for the purpose of binding. The  children are taught in very slow and guided steps to make them feel comfortable in their work and gradually achieve proficiency.

The Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh and Government Yoga College are already getting the books and journals bound from this institute and quality of binding is excellent and the rates are cheaper.

 

Recently paper recycling plant has also been installed to make  craft paper (handmade). Used paper is collected from several sections and  craft paper is prepared.

 

Shortly, this institute will be starting the printing job also in which several types of form, paper, books will be  printed in this institute, so that more and more children are employed.

 

 

Cooking & Bakery Section

 

The main aim of introducing the training in cooking and bakery section  is to make the mentally challenged children self dependant after getting sufficient knowledge in domestic as well as commercial production of food articles. Imparting of this training can help them in improving their knowledge in cooking and bakery.

After selecting the suitable candidates for teaching in cooking and bakery section the Children (I.Q. above 50) are taught 

preparation of basic food articles like sweets, cooked meals and baked items like bread, biscuits and pastry.

 

With the help of all kinds of teaching aids like charts of food items, plants, fruits, vegetables, food grains, oils, fuel items etc the children are taught  basic concept  like handling of food articles, hygiene, cutting of raw food etc. It is expected that after training from the section, these children will be in a position to start small bakery at their homes.

 

Cutting and Tailoring Section

 

Cutting and tailoring section is one of the prominent section of vocational wing. After basic education and training in primary  and secondary sections ,the child comes to vocational section wing. The main purpose of this section is to make the child capable of doing simple work relating to cutting and tailoring. The students in the section are in the age group of 15 to 20 years and their I.Q. is above 50. In this section, first of all we teach the child the basic concepts of cutting and tailoring i.e. identification of  tools and equipments used in cutting and tailoring thread.

 

After teaching the basic concept, the children are taught stitching of simple items like sheets, pillow covers, aprons, caps and curtains etc.

 

 

Candle Making

 

Mentally Retarded Children are provided vocational training in candle making, chalk making & recaining of chair to make them independent in working and helps them earning their living, This also improve their eye hand coordination and develops various social skills.

Children are taught candle making craft. They are made to learn different types of candles in attractive design and colours. Aluminum moulds of different types are used to teach candle making. Pure paraffin wax is used for making the candles. Cotton yarn of different specification is used for making different types of candles.

After the children as learnt the complete process of making candles he is given training for packing them in different boxes and polythene bags efforts are made to place the child in self employment to earn his living.

 

 

 

Chalk Making

 

Chalks are commonly used in schools or colleges for teaching purposes. Children are taught to learn chalk making with the help of moulds. In market moulds are available for making chalks with the capacity of 100 chalks, 500 chalks and 1000 chalks at a time but with the motive of teaching the children the moulds producing 100 chalks at a time are used. Chalk powder is mixed in proportion with water and indigo is added. Then the slurry is formed and is put into clean and oiled moulds. After 10 to 15 minutes the moulds are opened and the chalks are taken out and put in wooden trays for drying in the sun. After the chalks are 

dried they are packed in the boxes.

 

 

 

Caning of Chairs

 

The institute gets orders for the re-canning of different types of chairs from different Government Officies, Institutions and Private concerns. Children are taught recanning of chairs with high quality plastic cane. They learn recanning of chairs of the office chairs, steel chairs, easy chair, vidhan sabha chairs etc. The children are first of taught to put a special type of knot to join two cane pieces. Then according to the chairs children are taught to caned the chairs. These crafts are being taught to the children keeping in view the long term objective of placing

them and make them self independent.

 

 

 

Carpentry Section

 

Carpentry section was started in the year 2001. The children who have mild deficit in their intellectual capacity and good muscular coordination are selected for carpentry section. The children are taught about the instruments used in the carpentry section alongwith the safety measures. They are taught simple work including wooden blocks, stools, tables and simple chairs. This section also receives chairs from various Government offices for repair. The section has fourteen students.

Paper Recycling :

 

 

There are 11 children in this section. Age group is above 18 years. We use BASAL (MR) for assessment. The children are independent in ADL. Students make hand made Paper sheets by using waste paper, waste cotton clothes and synthetic clothes. Students are trained in different sub activities required for making theses sheets. These sheets are used for making paper bags, shagun envelops which are sold on exhibitions & stalls.The income goes to Umeed Project for rehabilitating these children and their families. Our motive is to make child as independent as possible.
